May 9, 2012 Indiana wasn’t about the Tea Party
Does Senator Lugar’s loss in Indiana mean a Republican can’t be nominated as a moderate conservative?
Not necessarily. A story in today’s Washington Post looks at Indiana polls, and suggests that Lugar’s loss was more due to his age and nonresidency in Indiana than to ideological warfare.
This view seems to be backed up by Indiana’s congressional primaries: in Dan Burton’s seat, a candidate who apparently was attacked for being insufficiently conservative, Susan Brooks, beat former Rep. David McIntosh. And in a more rural district, Rep. Larry Buchson beat a Tea Party challenger.
