June 13, 2012 The poorest majority white county in America
According to a recent post on Andrew Sullivan’s blog, the poorest majority-white county in the USA iis Owsley County, Kentucky. In 2008 it went 76-23 for McCain. But unlike in much of Appalachia this was not an anti-Obama thing: Bush got 78 percent in 2004 and 80 percent against Al Gore.
In fact, Owsley County was Republican before Republican was cool in the South: in 1976, Gerald Ford got 77 percent of its votes. And in 1960, Dick Nixon got 86 percent.
What’s going on here? Owsley County was pro-Union during the Civil War, so my guess is one of those places where people have been Republican since then and “voted as they shot.”
