June 19, 2012 More evidence of how obscure urban planning issues are to most people
When I went to CNU, we had a panel on how to deal with public paranoia about something called “Agenda 21” (some sort of pro-environmentalist UN document; apparently, a few John Birch Society types think anything anti-sprawl is part of a great conspiracy to foist it upon Americans). Based on the discussion, you might think that most Republicans, or at least most Tea Party sympathizers, are rabidly opposed to anything pro-walkability because of concerns about Agenda 21.
Reality check: a new poll shows that 6 percent of Americans oppose Agenda 21 (with about an equal number in support), including only 14 percent of Republicans. The overwhelming majority of Americans have never heard of it.
