November 2, 2012 Is Toronto great or what?
After reading recent headlines from Toronto, I was awakened yet again to the difference between a typical American city and a city that takes transit seriously. In many American cities, transit supporters have to fight to preserve cities. By contrast, in Toronto, there is a political fight between groups of transit supporters: the city council favors building numerous light rail lines, while the supposedly right-wing, pro-car, anti-bike mayor, Rob Ford, wants a subway instead, commenting: “People do not want these (LRTs) they want subways. We said it over and over and over again.”
